A university hospital affiliated with René Descartes University, the HEGP also allocates major resources to research: it has 8 INSERM (French public organization dedicated to biological, medical, and public health research) units, 2 CNRS (Centre national de la recherché scientifique, National Center for Scientific Research) units, university laboratories, a clinical investigation center, a clinical research unit and a clinical epidemiology unit. Construction on a 4,500 m2, 7-story research building began in 2005, with the aim of developing on-site research activities that are closely related to the hospital’s medical activities, and to bring together in one site all of the groups that are currently so spread out.

In use for only a short time, the femtosecond laser is a type of computer-driven micrometric cutting instrument that is much more precise than a human hand. It dissects corneal tissue at a specific depth and in three dimensions and can cut the same pattern in the donor and receiver, resulting in a perfect fit.
